Varnish, aqueous and UV coating: the protective finishes that are not lamination

Lamination gets most of the attention when people talk about print finishing, but a large proportion of coated print never sees a film at all. Brochures, book covers, packaging, menus and product sheets are more often finished with a liquid coating applied on the press or in a separate pass: a varnish, an aqueous coating or a UV coating. They cost less than lamination, add nothing to the thickness, can be applied to selected areas, and in some cases are the only finish that will work on a fold or a recycled stock. They also have limits, and choosing one because it is cheaper than lamination is how a brochure ends up scuffed after one delivery. This guide sets out what each coating is, what it does to the sheet, and where it fits.

The three coatings and how they are applied

Press varnish

An oil-based varnish run through an ink unit on an offset press, applied wet-on-wet as if it were a fifth colour. It dries by oxidation over several hours like the ink. It gives a modest gloss or a matte effect, seals the ink against marking, and can be run as a spot varnish from a plate, so it goes only where the design puts it. It yellows slightly over months, which matters on a white background and does not on a photograph.

Aqueous coating

A water-based acrylic applied from a coating unit at the end of the press and dried with hot air in the delivery. It dries almost immediately, so sheets can be turned or cut sooner than a varnished job, and it does not yellow. It is the default protective coating on most offset work today: a gloss, satin or matte aqueous over a full-colour sheet adds rub resistance and stops set-off at a small cost per thousand. Applied flood only; spot aqueous is possible with a blanket cut to shape but is rarely worth the make-ready.

UV coating

A liquid that cures instantly under ultraviolet lamps into a hard, high-gloss layer. It gives the shiniest, most scratch-resistant liquid finish and is applied flood or as a spot from a screen or a flexo plate. UV coating requires the ink under it to be dry or UV-cured, so on conventional offset it is usually an offline pass the next day. It cracks on a fold if applied over the crease, and it cannot be glued or written on without a special formulation.

The short version: aqueous is the sensible default for anything that folds, glues or gets recycled; UV is for flat pieces where shine and hardness matter; lamination is for anything handled repeatedly for months, such as a menu or a cover that goes in and out of a bag. What each coating does to colour

All coatings change the appearance of the ink. A gloss coating increases the apparent density and saturation of dark colours and makes photographs look richer; a matte coating flattens them and lightens shadows. The effect is noticeable enough that a proof made without the coating will not match the finished job, so ask for the proof to be coated, or at least ask the printer what shift to expect.

Matte aqueous and matte UV have a specific weakness: they burnish. A fingernail or a stack of sheets rubbing in transit leaves glossy marks on the matte surface, which show as streaks across a dark solid. On a matte finish over a heavy black, an anti-scuff aqueous or a soft-touch lamination is safer than a plain matte coating.

Where coatings go wrong

  • UV over a fold. The cured layer is brittle. On a folded brochure it cracks along the spine and shows a white line. Either score deeply and accept some cracking, keep the UV off the fold line as a spot, or use aqueous.
  • Coating over wet ink. Aqueous over heavy offset ink that has not set can trap solvents and cause a mottled, uneven gloss. A good pressroom slows the sheet or runs a lighter coat over heavy solids.
  • Coated stock plus heavy coating. A gloss UV over a high-gloss art paper looks superb and becomes a mirror; text over a photograph becomes hard to read under office lighting. Satin is usually the better call for anything with a lot of reading.
  • Gluing after coating. Folder pockets, box flaps and envelope seams need either an uncoated glue area (a knock-out in the coating plate) or a glue-able coating grade. A pocket folder glued over UV comes apart on the desk.
  • Inkjet addressing. Mailers coated with UV will not take inkjet addressing without a receptive area left uncoated.

Most of these come down to telling the printer what happens to the piece after it leaves the press: folded, glued, mailed, written on. The finishing sequence matters as much as the finish, and our note on ink drying and set-off explains why coating timing is part of it.

Specifying a coating on a job

A clear finishing spec reads something like "4/4 plus gloss aqueous flood both sides" or "4/0 plus spot UV to supplied mask, matte laminate underneath". For spot work, supply the spot area as a separate layer or a fifth colour named "UV" or "Varnish", set to overprint, at 100 percent; the printer makes the plate or screen from that layer. Keep spot elements at least 1 mm from any trim and do not run them across a fold. For a gloss-on-matte effect, the base is a matte laminate or matte aqueous and the spot is a gloss UV on top; the contrast is what people see, not the gloss on its own.
