Printing does not end the moment ink hits paper. There is a quiet, important stage that follows, when the ink has to dry or cure before the sheets can be safely handled, stacked and finished. Rush this stage and you get set-off, where wet ink from one sheet transfers onto the back of the sheet above it. Understanding how drying works explains a lot about print timelines and why a good printer sometimes builds in a pause.
Different printing methods dry in different ways, and the paper you choose plays a big role too. None of this is visible in the final product when it goes well, but it is very visible when it goes wrong.
How ink actually dries
Depending on the process, ink sets in one of a few ways. Knowing the basics helps you understand why some jobs are ready faster than others:
- On conventional offset, ink partly soaks into the paper and partly dries by oxidation, which takes time.
- On uncoated stock, ink absorbs quickly, so drying is faster but colors can look softer.
- On coated stock, ink sits more on the surface, giving vivid color but slower natural drying.
- With UV or LED curing, a lamp instantly hardens the ink, so sheets are ready almost immediately.

What set-off is and how printers prevent it
Set-off is the classic drying problem. If sheets are stacked while the ink is still wet, the weight presses the back of one sheet against the fresh ink below, leaving a faint ghost of the image. On heavy-coverage jobs, such as a solid dark background, the risk is higher. Experienced printers manage this in several ways:
- Allowing adequate drying time before finishing, rather than rushing to trim.
- Using a fine anti set-off spray powder that keeps sheets slightly separated.
- Reducing stack height so less weight presses on wet sheets.
- Choosing UV curing for heavy ink coverage or tight deadlines.

Drying also affects what comes next. A protective coating or lamination cannot go on properly over ink that is still wet, or it can trap solvents and cause problems later.
